PHILOSOPHY OF COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAMME

The philosophy of the programme is to train and graduate high quality computer scientists with bias for innovative software design and development that will play crucial roles in technological advancement nationally and globally as well as designing, deploying and adapting IT tools and techniques to attain a knowledge-driven society. The department is committed to nurturing quality graduates who are competent to drive the technological world, be employable and be creative enough to create job opportunities.

  • VISION – The Vision of Computer Science Department of the prestigious Hezekiah University is to produce students who are literally endowed with sophisticated knowledge of solving world problems by applying the use of software and the computer system, and also to produce students who will be critical thinkers, great analyzers and will have the ability to solve from simple to complex world problem by application of scientific methods.
  • MISSION – To produce students with deep technical problem solving ability, and students knowledgeable in programming languages, artificial intelligence, software engineering, system analysis, model design, optimization and other areas that exist in the field of computer technology and creating softwares to enhance people, organisations and the society at large.
  • AIM & OBJECTIVE – In view of the above philosophy, the specific aim of the department for its Bachelors Honours degree programme in Computer Science is to build solid foundation of computing skills and innovativeness as a sure capital base in its students. The aim is to be achieved through the following objectives:

    1. Create in students the awareness of and enthusiasm for computer science and its capabilities.
    2. Provide the students with intellectually-stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying adequate enough to meet the requirements of the ever dynamic and increasingly challenging field of computing.
    3. Produce graduates with a broad and balanced foundation in computer science knowledge and practical skills that would prepare them for industry relevance and global competitiveness.
    4. Develop in students through an education in computer science a range of transferable applicable skills of information technology to all aspects of human endeavours.
    5. Develop human capital with emphasis on attaining a knowledge-driven economy and society.
    6. Generate in students an appreciation of the importance of computer in an industrial, economic, technological and social context.
    7. Produce highly creative and innovative graduates that are competent enough to be self-employed in the field of Information Technology and its allied disciplines and at the same time, have comparative advantage of employability.
    8. Develop manpower to pursue careers in a wide range of professions including data science, decision science, software development, web design, system administration, project management, and computational sciences that would engender the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
    9. Provide students with knowledge and skills base for further studies in computer science or multi-disciplinary studies involving computer science.

Admission Requirements

Candidates are admitted into the B.Sc. Degree programmes of the department through any of the following three ways:

– Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

– Direct Entry

– Inter-University Transfer.

i) UTME

The entry requirements shall be at least, credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Physics to form the core subjects, with credit in any other two relevant science subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) based on the approved cut-off mark for the current academic session in which a candidate is seeking admission, with relevant subject combination required for admission into 100 Level.

ii) Direct Entry Mode

Applicants for admission by direct entry shall:

a) Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate or the General Certificate of Education (ordinary level) or an equivalent certificate with credit level passes in at least, five subjects, including English Language obtained in not more than two (2) sittings.

b) Possess at least, one of the following:

  • Joint University Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB)
  • A minimum of a lower credit pass at the ND or a diploma in a relevant discipline.
  • A first university degree or its equivalent
  • Any other qualification acceptable to the senate.

c) Candidates with two A level passes (graded A-E) in relevant subjects (Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) may be admitted into 200 level. This is in addition to fulfilling the requirement of a minimum of credit level passes in five relevant subjects at SSCE or WASCE/GCE ‘O’ Level as indicated above.

d) Candidates who possess good National Diploma in Computer Science can be offered Direct Entry admission into 200 level.

iii. Inter-University Transfer

Candidates wishing to transfer into the Department of Computer Science from another university must have:

(a) Filled the Inter-University Transfer form obtained from Hezekiah University Admissions Officer.

(b) Satisfied the department’s minimum academic standard required for such level.

Every organisation’s payroll, customer records and finances are held electronically, sometimes containing millions and millions of records. The digital world is really upon us. Looking to the future, initiatives such as cloud computing will connect us all through small portable devices, enhancing social networking and allowing us to exchange audio and video data from our daily lives.

We therefore welcome you to the Department of Computer Science at Hezekiah University Umudi, Imo State. In our department, we try to give you an insight into Computer Science and Software Engineering, and the opportunities that we can provide to study these subjects. Our degrees are available in a variety of forms to suit the needs of our students and the many careers available in industry and commerce worldwide.
